Taff Rapids
Bluegrass, from Wales
Taff Rapids are Cardiff's breakout bluegrass force, breathing fresh life into Appalachian tradition while rooting their sound firmly in Welsh soil. Built on original songwriting, breakneck picking, and razor-sharp vocal harmonies, the band fuse classic bluegrass drive with Celtic melodic sensibility, creating a sound that feels at once deeply traditional and strikingly new. Singing in both English and Welsh, their songs flow like a fast river—banjo rolls, fiddle lines, mandolin chop and guitar runs interlocking with precision and fire—earning them a reputation for musical authority and sheer momentum.
Made up of Darren Eedens, Siôn Russell Jones, David Grubb, and Clem Saynor, Taff Rapids have developed a distinctive identity they proudly describe as Bl?gras—a uniquely Welsh interpretation of bluegrass that honours the music's Appalachian roots while embracing Wales' own rich folk heritage. Their arrangements balance speed and space, virtuosic instrumental breaks with close, emotional harmony singing, and storytelling that connects mountain music traditions across the Atlantic.
Their rise on the international bluegrass and folk circuit has been swift and significant. Taff Rapids made history as the first Welsh act to officially showcase at IBMA World of Bluegrass (USA) and have also appeared at Folk Alliance International (Canada), firmly establishing themselves on the North American roots scene. Across Europe and the UK, their festival appearances have included Festival Interceltique de Lorient, Green Man, Purbeck Valley Folk Festival, Sesiwn Fawr, La Roche, Rotterdam, Beardy Folk Festival, Fire in the Mountain, The Magpies Festival, and many more—each performance reinforcing their reputation as a live band of rare energy and authenticity.
On stage, Taff Rapids deliver a hard-driving bluegrass show that nods to the genre's pioneers while pushing fearlessly forward. Their performances are marked by lightning-fast instrumental exchanges, foot-stomping rhythms, and an infectious joy that draws audiences deep into the music—whether on a major festival stage or in an intimate room where every note rings out.
Broadcast and media support has followed naturally. The band have received regular airplay across BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio Wales, and BBC Radio Cymru, alongside television appearances on BBC Two, BBC Four, and S4C, including national coverage of their performance at the National Eisteddfod. Their debut album, Bl?gras (2025), was widely praised by Songlines and R2 Magazine, capturing the band's evolving songwriting voice and instrumental prowess while firmly placing Welsh bluegrass on the global map.
Having already completed successful tours across the UK, Europe, and Canada, and with a fast-growing international following, Taff Rapids continue to expand their reach. Their blend of Welsh folk identity, bluegrass tradition, and modern roots songwriting positions them at the forefront of a new transatlantic movement—where Appalachian strings meet Celtic spirit, and tradition is not preserved in amber, but set thrillingly in motion.
