Appearing at the beautifully intimate Barnoldswick Music & Arts Centre on Monday 25th May, prepare for an evening where the golden spirit of Gypsy jazz burns brightly as Fapy Lafertin & Tcha Limberger—two of the most revered figures in European string jazz—share a UK stage together.

To understand the magic of this night is to step briefly into the history of Gypsy jazz itself—a music born in 1930s Paris from the revolutionary partnership of Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli. Together, through the legendary Quintet of the Hot Club of France, they created an entirely new sound: swing without drums, driven instead by dancing acoustic guitars, soaring violin lines, and a rhythmic pulse that felt both intimate and electrifying.
Django's dazzling guitar technique—shaped after a devastating fire left him with limited use of two fingers—became one of the great miracles in musical history, while Grappelli's lyrical violin brought elegance and romance to the music. Their recordings transformed European jazz and still echo through every note played in the style today.
The artists appearing at Barnoldswick stand directly in that living lineage—keepers of a flame first lit in Paris nearly a century ago.

Fapy Lafertin is widely regarded as one of the true heirs to Django Reinhardt's musical crown. A master guitarist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist of global stature, Lafertin played a pivotal role in the late-20th-century resurgence of Gypsy jazz, reintroducing its elegance, fire, and lyrical sophistication to new generations of musicians and listeners. After nearly half a century on the world's stages, his artistry remains defined by melodic purity, breathtaking technique, effortless swing, and a humility that lets the music speak first.
His seminal early-1990s releases, 94–96: The Recordings, are now considered modern canon—historic documents revered for both their majestic sound and musical brilliance, often spoken of as the most important Gypsy jazz recordings since the final sessions of the Quintet of the Hot Club of France.

The critical acclaim surrounding Lafertin is extraordinary:
"Lafertin is the legitimate heir to Django's crown."Bob Wilber, USA
"Fapy has a sound that might even have made Django envious… a mature guitarist at his peak."Vintage Guitar Magazine, USA
"Lafertin delves into realms beyond Django."Guitar Technique, USA
"Arguably the most revered European Gypsy musician since the death of Django Reinhardt."Dave Kelbie, UK
"Guitar heroes come in many forms, and Lafertin is one, without doubt."London Jazz News, UK

Alongside him stands the astonishing Tcha Limberger—a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, composer, educator, and one of the most emotionally profound musicians of his generation. Blind since childhood and raised within a rich musical heritage, Limberger developed an extraordinary ear and expressive depth that allow him to move seamlessly between Gypsy jazz, Hungarian folk, classical traditions, and original composition. His international career spans decades, continents, and collaborations across the highest levels of acoustic music, and his performances possess a rare, almost spiritual intensity—music that feels ancient, immediate, and timeless all at once.

The press speaks of Limberger in near-mythic tones:
"The polymath virtuoso… the king of Gypsy music."The Sunday Times
"Tcha Limberger seems to be made entirely out of music."The Observer
"As intoxicating as a vintage dessert wine."Songlines

Completing this extraordinary ensemble are two of the most respected rhythm musicians in acoustic jazz: Dave Kelbie and Sébastien Girardot.
Kelbie's rhythm guitar is celebrated worldwide for its precision, warmth, and unstoppable swing, forming the harmonic engine behind countless landmark projects and festival appearances—from Django-inspired ensembles to Creole jazz collaborations with Don Vappie.
Girardot's double bass provides the deep, singing pulse that allows the music to breathe, dance, and soar with effortless authority.

Together, they are revered as one of the finest rhythm pairings in the genre—what Limberger himself calls "the Rolls-Royce of rhythm sections."

Their accolades speak volumes:
"Dave Kelbie's rhythmic guitar and Sébastien Girardot's pulsating bass form the foundation on which the music breathes and communicates—every note alive."Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger
"Kelbie's rhythm guitar is undoubtedly one of the best in the world."Classica, France
"The rhythmic rumbling of a folksy freight train."Jazz da Gama, USA
"Girardot… swinging with impeccable taste."Jazz da Gama, USA
"Bass solos full of beautiful authority."Couleurs Jazz, France

For one night in the Pennine hills, the atmosphere of Parisian cafés, caravan fires, festival stages, and the golden age of swing will gather inside one of the UK's most intimate and magical listening rooms. Strings will shimmer, melodies will whirl like candlelight, and the timeless language of Gypsy jazz—born with Django and Grappelli and carried forward by masters like Lafertin and Limberger—will unfold just a few feet from where you sit.

This is more than a concert.
It is living musical history—rare, radiant, and utterly unforgettable.
