Sunday 31st January 2027 | Barnoldswick Music & Arts Centre
Some bands entertain. Some bands leave their mark. And then there are those rare musical visionaries who change the course of popular music forever. Steely Dan belong firmly in that last category. On Sunday 31st January 2027, Barnoldswick Music & Arts Centre is delighted to welcome back the extraordinary REELIN' IN THE DAN, the outstanding six-piece ensemble whose previous appearances have demonstrated just how breathtaking the music of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen can be when performed by musicians with the technical brilliance, imagination and sheer musical instinct to do it justice. They've been here before, you've loved them before, and now they're returning yet again!
When Walter Becker and Donald Fagen emerged in the early 1970s, they weren't interested in following the conventions of the rock industry. Drawing upon the harmonic sophistication of jazz, the rhythmic elegance of soul, the attitude of rock and roll and a lyrical imagination steeped in dark humour and urban mythology, they created something entirely their own. Their 1972 debut Can't Buy a Thrill introduced the world to Do It Again, Dirty Work and Reelin' in the Years, but it was merely the beginning of one of the most remarkable creative journeys in modern music.
Albums including Countdown to Ecstasy, Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, Aja and Gaucho established Steely Dan as one of the most sophisticated and influential acts ever to achieve mainstream commercial success. These weren't ordinary rock records; they were masterclasses in composition, arrangement, performance and production. Becker and Fagen surrounded themselves with extraordinary musicians, including Larry Carlton, Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie, Michael McDonald, Jeff Porcaro, Chuck Rainey and Wayne Shorter, creating recordings that remain reference points for generations of musicians, producers and recording engineers.
Their masterpiece Aja (1977) effortlessly bridged jazz, rock and sophisticated pop, becoming one of the most celebrated albums in recording history. Their influence continues to reach far beyond the jazz-rock genre, shaping contemporary soul, pop and even hip-hop. Steely Dan were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, the same year their comeback album Two Against Nature won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Few artists have combined such uncompromising musical ambition with such enduring commercial success.
And what a catalogue they left us! From the intricate guitar brilliance of Kid Charlemagne and the irresistible groove of Peg to the sophisticated melancholy of Deacon Blues, the swagger of Josie, the unmistakable Rikki Don't Lose That Number and the timeless Reelin' in the Years, these are songs that continue to reveal something new with every listen. Music of extraordinary depth, sophistication and beauty that somehow sounds as fresh today as it did half a century ago.
Of course, performing this remarkable repertoire requires considerably more than a competent collection of musicians playing familiar songs. It demands a deep understanding of complex harmonies, intricate arrangements, immaculate timing and the almost supernatural rhythmic chemistry that made the original recordings so special. Reelin' in the Dan are precisely that band. Their outstanding six-piece line-up captures the shimmering keyboard textures, beautifully constructed guitar solos, punchy saxophone lines, rich vocal harmonies and effortlessly flowing grooves of the originals, while retaining the excitement and spontaneity of a truly exceptional live performance.
Their reputation continues to grow, with enthusiastic audiences describing them as "Phenomenal band, genius musicians" and "About as close as you'll get to seeing Steely Dan live." Another admirer praised their willingness to explore the deeper catalogue alongside the familiar hits, while one memorable audience reaction simply declared it "A night I won't forget for a long time." These are musicians who understand that Steely Dan's genius lies not merely in playing the correct notes, but in capturing the feel, intelligence, subtlety and musical adventure behind them.
Following their previous successful appearances at Barnoldswick, including memorable shows in 2023, we're absolutely delighted to be welcoming Reelin' in the Dan back once again. There's something particularly magical about hearing music of this calibre in our intimate little listening room. No vast arena, no enormous distance between the performers and the audience, just six exceptional musicians, one of the greatest catalogues in popular music and an audience close enough to appreciate every note, every harmony and every beautifully executed musical twist.
Whether you're a lifelong Steely Dan devotee who knows every note of Aja and Gaucho, or someone who simply appreciates beautifully crafted songs and outstanding musicianship, this promises to be another unforgettable evening. The music of Steely Dan is far too important to be left gathering dust in the record collection. It deserves to be heard, celebrated and performed by musicians who truly understand its genius. And that is exactly what Reelin' in the Dan do.
