Few British bands are woven into the emotional and musical tapestry of the 1980s quite like China Crisis. Emerging from Kirkby near Liverpool at a time when British music was exploding with creativity, experimentation and individuality, China Crisis became one of the defining voices of the decade — crafting sophisticated, cinematic songs that blended electronic textures, jazz influences, art-pop elegance and deeply human songwriting. While many bands of the era came and went with fashion, China Crisis created music that endured. Songs such as Wishful Thinking, Christian, Black Man Ray, Arizona Sky, King in a Catholic Style and Working With Fire And Steel remain woven into the DNA of British music culture, still played, celebrated and rediscovered by new generations across the world.

What makes China Crisis particularly remarkable is that their story never stopped. While many of their contemporaries became heritage acts frozen in time, Gary Daly and Eddie Lundon continued to evolve creatively, recording, writing and performing continuously for more than four decades. Across forty years, the band have maintained a rare artistic integrity — never chasing trends, never losing their melodic identity, and continuing to produce thoughtful, atmospheric and emotionally resonant music that sits comfortably alongside their classic catalogue. Their live performances today carry not only the nostalgia of an era, but the depth and confidence of a band still creatively alive.

This August, China Crisis will undertake one of the most intimate and ambitious projects of their long career: a four-night residency at the legendary Barnoldswick Music & Arts Centre to record a very special "UNCENSORED" Official Bootleg Live Album in front of an audience of just a handful of devoted fans each night. Across the residency, the band will perform two concerts in their acclaimed Electric Quartet format — atmospheric, stripped-back and emotionally immersive — alongside two nights with the full band, delivering the richer, expansive soundscapes and rhythmic sophistication that have defined China Crisis concerts for generations.

These recordings are intended to become part of the band's official archive — authentic "Official Bootlegs" capturing China Crisis exactly as they are today: intimate, spontaneous, warm and gloriously alive. Rather than polishing away the atmosphere of the room, the recordings aim to preserve the humanity, humour, imperfections, audience interaction and emotional connection that make live music truly matter.

In keeping with the spirit of the project, every ticket holder attending the residency will receive a personal name credit on the finished release, whether the final format becomes CD, vinyl, or both — ensuring that everyone in the room becomes part of the story and part of the recording itself. Fans will also have the opportunity to meet and chat with the band after each performance, making these evenings feel less like conventional concerts and more like a gathering of friends, memories and shared musical history.

Inside the candlelit intimacy of Barnoldswick Music & Arts Centre — one of the UK's most celebrated grassroots listening rooms — these four nights promise to capture something increasingly rare in modern music: honesty, closeness, atmosphere and legacy preserved in real time. Sixty people. One room. Forty years of extraordinary music. Forever documented.
